ONGOING WEEKLY EVENTS
The Belle of Amherst

Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting with Laurel Owen and Marvin Jonason, the star and director of the play “The Belle of Amherst” based on the life of Emily Dickenson, written by William Luce.

Upon first impression, I was intrigued by the excitement that came from Laurel, who plays Emily and her director Marvin about putting the play together which has taken the biggest part of a year. When asking Ms. Owen what the biggest challenge had been she said with a grin, “Memorizing the large amount of dialogue!”

I also asked the two about what inspired them to do this particular play and the answer was “the challenge”, and the wish to honor one of America’s most talented, yet little known poet.

Emily Dickenson was called a recluse, crazy, odd, and more, which would have been a normal thing to assume in her time…Indeed, it is now widely believed that she was spiritually evolved far past the time she lived in. What greater place to show this than Eureka Springs, Arkansas!?

Laurel Owen and Marvin Jonason did the writer and the subject of the Belle of Amherst much honor, as they truly showed a side to Miss Dickenson that few know about and far exceeds anything written in books.

I actually intended to simply do the interview and take pictures but at some point, my camera was completely forgotten as I took a seat and was swept up and away to a simpler time, into the life of a very misunderstood, very talented and amazing woman. Ms. Owen and her brilliant depiction of Emily Dickenson was nothing short of brilliant as she captivated her audience with ease from her very first words, to her last, performance after performance. The audience walked away feeling as if they had been in the presence of the woman, the poet Emily Dickenson.

I laughed, I giggle, and I felt sorrow, happiness, incredible loss, her sadness and pain. In the end, unexpected tears fell silently down my face and the faces of those around me.

In conclusion, I came away from the Belle of Amherst and my talk with Laurel and Marvin with an entirely new view of a great lady. Emily Dickenson lived again that night. Ms. Owen and Mr. Jonason are truly two of Eureka Springs most talented! The ability of Ms. Owen to step into the life of another, coupled with the talent of a director to guide her in that transformation, brought Emily Dickenson from the page of a script and made her breathe…….
